Are we sure that a Catholic President, although being a Democrat, doesn't have philosophical objections to abortion and is simply letting the political machine run its course? It would hardly be the first of core Democratic principles to fall victim to that philosophy and the rightward leaning of a Democratic administration. Every Democratic President since Carter would have been quite comfortable in the Republican party as it existed pre-Reagan.
