Around about the mid 1880s the government gave away (Native) land that it had no hope of controlling, It basically said "We'll be back in a hundred years, more or less, to check on you. Till then, the politicians and preachers are in charge."

From that grew the American version of Christianity and has gotten stronger, and crazier, since then. One has to wonder how Christian leadership in other nations compares its position as one of preservers of knowledge and the arts over centuries with our Jesus in toast.
