Being poor is expensive, but it gets less expensive if you don't work. Many couples who both worked didn't lose that much if one stopped working when the 2nd vehicle, gas, clothes, meals, daycare, etc. are no longer needed. I'm sure many are figuring why work only to afford insurance when you're just circling the drain anyway, and many couples were doing just that.
