Desktops have regained much of their popularity due to gamers and those building home entertainment/streaming centers. They handle the heat of faster processors and video cards much better with their generous airflow. They also can be upgraded with new technology without having to purchase entire systems at once.

Three of us have a total of 6 desktops and 2 laptops in the house. I don't think anyone has picked up their laptop since Covid began. The desktops serve specialized purposes and all but one were assembled from parts. None of us are serious gamers, so we stay one generation behind gamer rigs and I think only one of the systems cost over $1000 when first built with the others far below that.
