Gohmert is simply proof that democracy is a failed concept, or one that is before its time. When a political structure can profit from the ignorance of the masses it will do so, and democracy has done little except enable that.
Much of our constitution is nothing more than an appeal to ignorance that was necessary to enlist a group of colonies into the revolution. The right to remain ignorant and still hold onto political and economic power is the basis of state's rights and the reason it is so difficult to overcome ignorance and superstition in our politics.
Americans hate their central government but are OK with state and county governments that are mostly redundant vestiges of two century old technologies. They know that their ignorance has more influence in government that is closest to them and their tribes. Given the way that power is distributed via the Senate and districting, it is amazing that we have lasted this long.
