How about removing taxation of corporations at the federal level and simply demanding that functioning in the public purpose be a criteria of keeping their corporate charter? Nibbling around the edges in hope of seeing some benefit to the people when the government has the power to regulate any function of business is a fool’s errand, especially with token incentives like a 2% tax break.

Corporate charters should be reserved for businesses that are proven to serve the public good, not handed out to anyone who asks for one. If managers had to be legally responsible for their decisions, including jail time and full damage assessments, most of our problems with the environment and worker treatment would go away on their own. The indemnity from responsibility for decisions given with a corporate charter should be closely held by our government, not granted to just anyone. It is the government’s seal of approval and it should be all buyers/consumers need to look for.
