I did a Jr High science project convering water to hydrogen and running small engines from that in the early '60s. I used aluminum as a catalyst simply because it was cheap and available, but it is also recoverable and still relatively cheap. Powering electric generators would be a no brainer and solve many of the issues with its volitility. Most of the infrastructure of solar would fit next to hydrogen electric generation until it comes up to scale.
