I don’t really think anyone is dealing from the top of the deck in finance anymore. Without customers with cash in hand, there is little motivation to increase production or productivity. The capitalists have overplayed their hand and have created a two-tier society where the rules of capitalism no longer apply and now it’s just a matter of grabbing what they can via rent-seeking. This is called “late stage” capitalism and it almost always is accompanied by war, which is how government can best shovel money to investors covertly.
We need to bring balance back to the relationship between business and labor which will restore capitalism. We have a lot of productive capacity, including our imports, to balance more demand, and suppliers will respond to capture that demand in the economy. They may be shortsighted, but they aren’t stupid. We just have to take away the lessons we learned and realize that capital will not regulate or monitor itself in any way. Government can also be productive if it provides services that enable efficiencies, such as education infrastructure, and health care.
