I don't think the Watergate hearings had a competing version of events on another channel, but I could be wrong.

Integrity and honesty were still important in American politics pre-RayGun, pre-Fox News, and the think tanks funding the right-wing fascist takeover. Nixon's party couldn't distance themselves from him fast enough and jetisoning him was their version of damage control.

I'd now be happy to find a Republican politician anywhere nearly as honest as Nixon. One would be hard pressed to find many even in the Democratic party and it is supposed to be the party of the working class.

Nixon would be considered a full on socialist by today's political standards and we went from "what did he know and when did he know it?" about his political campaign operatives to an elected President that measured the time between his lies in minutes.

I'd be quite happy to see Nixon and many of his policies cloned and installed in the White House again and I'm barely right of Marx.
