I had the same issue except mine was in a sub-clavian vein and instead of pnuemonia I got the MERSA virus. Nothing a little time in intensive care and a hundred thousand dollars couldn't fix.
Another time the surgeons missed a bleeder in my gut and dismissed me because of my insurance that dictated specific stay limits for each malady. I was back the next day and received 10 pints of whole blood to top me off after collapsing three times.
Just recently, I experienced blindness in my right eye for 3 months due to a simple catatract operation that went bad because the surgeon decided I didn't need to wait for my blood thinners to leave my system. I came very close to losing my eye and a surgery that was supposed to be painless was nothing short of excruciating.
