I think that the fact that so many Americans don't pay attention to politics or vote is the only thing that has kept the country from a full-fledged fascist takeover. It's difficult enough to pound reality into the thick skulls of those who become semi-engaged around election time without trying to teach economics and political history to the remaining dullards.

The left would have us believe that non-voters are all progressives who just can't find the time to determine their future path with a little effort extended for one day every few years. I believe that is the epitome of optimism formulated by unicorn worshipers. Dullards, as a group, tend to be rough around the edges and barely able to manage their daily routine of window licking, much less see a logical direction for their country.

Society has always ridden the backs of about 10-20% of its population who create and manage things. That means that a democracy that would force its people to vote could only expect to find its least capable members, the ones who both want the job and can relate to the 80-90% of citizens, elected to office to manage the largest economy and most powerful military in history. As bad as it is, it could be far worse. The Achilles heel of democracy is democracy.
