I would prefer that progressives abandon Keynes entirely. His approach to spending was to "save up" for future needs in good times and has given us absurd policy such as Social Security and Medicare that function as if they were funded by workers. In reality, payroll deductions do nothing except draw down the incomes of workers in the present with a pretense of making that income available in the future. Payments, of any kind, to the federal government do not enable its spending in the future. They simply "uncreate/destroy" the money previously created by deficit spending.
I had hopes that Covid would expose the economic lies we have been told for decades, but MMT doesn't have to be "implemented". It is simply how money is created and destroyed in our economic system. We can utilize it much better than we do presently, but it is, and always has been, how money works.
