I'm still a believer in people working for their livings whenever they are able. I also know that a UBI would soon devolve into a pass-through for federal money to businesses in the form of higher rents and necessities not matched by wage increases.

That said, I don't believe that business should be the only arbiter of what constitutes "work". Most of the present volunteer activities could easily become "paid" positions, as well as anything that benefits the common good. People's talents could be utilized better if they were allowed a way to be paid for what they know and love.

A job guarantee program creates new money where and when it is needed countercyclical to the business cycle. A UBI just shotguns money to everyone without regard for their income status and is almost guaranteed to be inflationary.
