In spite of being categorized as extreme (crazy?) I've made survival skills a priority in my life since the '60s. Even if one doesn't actually need them they offer a sense of security in knowing it is possible to live without much of the supply chain we have come to depend upon.
That said, I can't totally get behind the survivalist mentality that sees everyone as a potential looter or enemy. We should be building co-operative groups with a mix of skills so we don't have to "go it alone" in the event of social collapse. No one can quickly attain all of the skillset needed and the generation that once had those skills are rapidly dying off.
The groups you are likely to find on social media with an emphasis on survival concentrate heavily on self protection, which is fine until you discover that a bird on your roof can be as deadly as an armed marauder if you collect rain water without knowing how to sterilize it for drinking or cooking. Many more will likely die from improperly processed food than from starvation.
