It is not naive, but it is uninformed. The people affected by this stunt were already in the legal system as "asylum seekers" and were doing everything correctly. We "were" caring for them as our law requires until a group of fascists within our government committed an illegal and cruel act aimed at deceiving them and causing them to invalidate their own claim for asylum.
