I've studied and taught sustainable building methods since the '80s and all I can say is "good luck with that". People are not wired to accept any personal responsibility where it means sacrifice.

I've built and sold homes that were capable of being fully heated and cooled without an energy source more than what was needed to run a small fan and some small servo motors on a blind system for the greenhouse. The system wasn't reactive enough to offer instant variations in temps on-demand, so every one of them ended up with a furnace and air conditioner as an aftermarket add-on by the buyer.

One buyer even installed curtains in the greenhouse to enable its use as living space, completely destroying the heating/cooling function of the house. When I told them the consequences of this they dismissed me by stating that they could afford it, so why not use the space. This was during the energy/oil crisis of the late '70s.
