Many of these responses are heartwarming and show there are still good people in the world. Fifty plus years of conservative lies and propaganda haven't really changed that.

However, charity is not the point of food stamps and never was. Like most of our safety net programs food stamps have the primary purpose of injecting federal money into the system to avoid supply chain collapse when the "free market" fails, which is most of the time.

If you know a grocery manager ask him/her what would happen to their business should food stamps suddenly disappear from the economy. Most stores would see their already thin margins decimated and many would simply fail, plus food would become more expensive for everyone. Also, how would you like living in a society where at least `10% of the population was faced with not being able to feed their families? It wouldn't be pretty, or humane.
