MMT only claims to be an accurate description of our existing monetary system without the archaic and overused gold standard thinking now applied to government budgeting. The fact that it can show how to eliminate poverty within the existing system is its beauty in my opinion. Congress can afford anything that can be resourced, including the labor pool the private sector rejects, without incurring inflationary pressures.
No “system” can preclude the effects of corrupt or inept governance. However, widespread knowledge of MMT’s potential would make it extremely difficult for corrupt or inept representatives to avoid public ridicule and prevent their re-election. It removes the excuses we hear constantly from the likes of Manchin and other conservatives/neoliberals that misrepresent their donors’ agendas as valid econ.
