My father was a hands-on home builder, so I got to learn all the skills and trades I needed to be mostly self-sufficient very early. Even more importantly, he taught me that one cannot have too much practical knowledge about how things work. I've seldom had to rely on others to repair or build things, including my computers and networking.

I'm too old now to be scrambling around a building site, but I always have my knowledge to share as my buy-in to a community. The specialization of labor has done much to build our society, but it comes with the price of dependence that I would suggest not accepting with any degree of comfort. The internet has made it possible to learn from experts in any field you think you may need in the future. Use it and take detailed notes.
