My grandparents had a fruit orchard with several types of apples and my grandmother made apple butter for a local market, but we (family) never ate it. I'm sure she made terrific tasting apple butter as she had no trouble selling all she made, but we were put off by the fact that my grandfather planted an apple tree every time he moved the outhouse.
However, her home business included baking bread for the same market and my aunt used her recipe for apple butter and kept the family supplied with apples from her farm "not" in proximity to anyone's outhouse. I can never think of my grandmother without smelling bread baking in the wood fired oven and remembering the taste of it still hot with apple butter and lots of real creamery butter slathered on.
Thanks for reminding me of those fond memories and one of many family jokes.
