One of the primary motivations for a convention appears to be the misunderstanding of basic econ among voters and most politicians and the desire to see balanced budgets. This would destroy the American economy and likely cause major upheaval in the world, and an amendment requiring such would make it extremely hard to reverse course.

The last seven times a balanced budget or surplus was even attempted resulted in almost immediate recessions or depression, but Americans are slow learners prone to emotional propaganda as a driving force for their opinions. One can only hope that more intelligent minds would be advising our leadership and that leadership will be more concerned about the people's wellbeing than their own.
