Republicans are well known for falling in line behind their own. In light of the events still unfolding since the coup attempt this would mean forcing many more center right voters to the Democratic candidates that have courted them to the infuriation of their own base. A further move to the right by Democratic leadership would decimate the GOP, leaving it with only Trump's misinformed supporters.

Both major parties are suffering fractures that threaten their standing in such divisive political times when less than a percentage point is often the separation deciding elections. Trump's actions could easily drive a wedge down the middle of the GOP that would be difficult to extract. This was made evident by how quickly VP Pence joined the ranks of the hunted on the day of the insurrection.

Trump's impeachment would partially solve this quandary for the GOP, but only because of the timing that gives it time to have a mass intervention for his fanatical followers to bring them back into the fold. It would, however, not rule out any of Trump's family from picking up the votes of that following. Trump will be a name not easily erased from our political history, or future.
