The entire concept of blue and red states is a falsehood. Our political divide is much more about urban and rural than it is about state lines. Chicago is the primary difference between Illinois and Indiana. If major cities were able to declare independence from their states the entire country would turn blue in just a decade. Imagine if Atlanta siphoned off the house representation its population represents from Georgia and gained two Senate seats in the process. About three major cities doing so would shake up electoral politics and make it much more democratic.
