The error in your assumption is thinking Democrats want to remain in the majority. They don't. They have not been comfortable with leadership since FDR, especially since they adopted the Powell memo as their neoliberal bible.

The Democratic party always has someone safe, or willing to lose, that can be used to thwart progressive policies. Biden was once one of those himself in the Senate and was largely responsible for equating neoliberalism with "moderate".
