The Fight Over the Debt Ceiling Is Dangerous and Dumb. That’s a Bad Combination.
That is a great description of the Senate and the GOP that has staked out its territory there, perhaps forever. It is very hard to justify America's claim to democratic rule when "land" gets the final vote on everything it does. "Dumber than dirt" is what comes to mind whenever the conversation includes the US Senate.
As America's population transitions further into its cities and its government is asked to address the issues they will have the Senate will prove to be even more of an obstruction to its progress. It is estimated that in just a few years 20% of the population will hold a majority of political representation over the 80% there.
With that kind of political imbalance it is highly unlikely that the GOP will agree to anything that might reduce the advantage it has there. It will, with only the desire to retain its power, frame its justification in even more divisive language and tactics. If we are faced with another bloody war between rural and urban it will be the Senate GOP at its core.
