The one place where you "can't" own or carry a weapon freely is any US military base or property. This is in spite of the fact that military members are the best trained and qualified group in the country. If your job doesn't require you to carry a weapon you would be prudent to not do so, or face a heavy penalty.

I've worked in private security and had a federal license to sell firearms and ammunition. I've also given expert testimony involving weapons and ballistics. My business involved transporting large sums of cash as well, so I had a concealed carry permit. That business put me in contact with a wide variety of different gun owners, ranging from hunters to police officers and even bounty hunters.

I've never been afraid of being around guns and gun owners until I moved into an apartment complex next door to a gun "enthusiest". The undisciplened and casual way he handled his weapons served to remind me constantly that the only thing separating him from my family was a couple layers of sheetrock. It was enough to prompt me to move for fear of one of my kids becoming a "statistic" of unregulated gun ownership.

The responsibility of gun ownership is always a constant, but it is often overlooked where neighbors are more widely separated than the range of their weapons. I've seen and heard of numerous "accidents" with guns among the most well trained owners. I didn't need the constant fear of having a neighbor who thought that "owning" a gun was the only requirement necessary to ensure their security.

Also, businesses aren't going to accept the liability of their employees or customers being randomly armed. That means that gun owners are separated from their weapons a good share of the time. Guns are one of the most lucrative targets of breakins of homes or autos. You and your gun kinda need to be within proximity to gain any security from it, otherwise, you are potentially arming someone who no one believes should be. Only a drug addled fool is going to attempt to break in while you are present.
