The one thing the GOP has mastered is reading voters. They, afterall, were the originators of the think tanks that study their voters/consumers under some very powerful microscopes. Back in the day before politicians were as corruptible as they are now, those think tanks were "ad agencies" that learned to predict how consumers would react to stimulus. They were very very good at it. If bullying and intimidation didn't work they wouldn't do it.
