The only hope for avoiding a dystopian future is for the people to reject both political parties in the US and form some consensus about our economic reality as a baseline from which we can formulate policy. Almost all current concepts popular with the voting public are complete fabrications intended to distract and obfuscate to the great benefit of the ruling class.

This is highly unlikely to transpire simply because "democracy" and the need for the average person to feel s/he has an impact on subjects they are not qualified to understand, much less to manage. The degree to which the average American's opinion is manipulated and controlled has never been higher, and it threatens the very concept that allows democracy in the first place. Our best hope is that some benevolent dictator will manage to take power and work for the benefit of the people against their ignorance. There are not many "benevolent" dictators out there though.
