There is a difference between reserve currency and specified standard denomination. In the case of a reserve currency, that currency would have to be obtained to transact commerce between nations. Otherwise, the trading nations would simply agree to use a specific currency as a unit of measure against which to value the commodity even if payment is made in another currency.
