"They’re not paying their taxes, and children are starving."
There is zero, nada, correlation between the wealthy, or anyone, paying taxes and allowing children to starve. While I applaud your compassion, compassion will not get the kids fed, or the taxes collected as long as feeding the kids is dependent upon collecting taxes from the best funded opposition in world history.
Congress has an infinite number of US dollars at their disposal to accomplish social goals and fund the common welfare. If they have proven themselves proficient at nothing else, we know they can spend more than they collect, which is not a bad thing by itself. Taxes (and borrowing) serve no funding purpose at the federal level because Congress is the monopoly issuer of US dollars and can afford anything denominated in dollars, regardless of revenue or past spending. If the government taxed away "ALL" of wealth above any amount the Congress decided upon they would still have no more than infinite dollars available to spend.
Bezos, and all the other billionaires, should pay more, but not with the purpose of "funding" the government. They simply make too much money and use it to pervert our democracy. The best way to deal with them is to make them irrelevant to our society and its proper functioning, not to set ourselves up for failure by hinging all of our hopes on their generosity and the integrity of politicians. If Americans are hungry it is for only one reason. Politicians, either through ignorance, ideology, or corruption, have made the political decision that they should be. There is NO economic reason to justify it.
