This is the result of neoliberalism, the worship of markets as a solution to all problems. There are literally no politicians in America who don't subscribe to the concept, although in varying degrees. Those who wish to harness the earnings of market capitalism to the benefit of the people still require market capitalism to function to achieve their goals.

Market capitalism believes that all people are self-interested and will make decisions that best serve society because of that. How absurd can people get with their mental masturbation? Society is people coming together by giving up much of their self-interests to serve the greater good.

The strength of societies lies in their morality, not the absence of the same. No market can be held responsible for morality or it ceases to function. We can't fix our society with the same tools and mindset that broke it.
