When regulations required banks to input deposits before debits and in the order receiving them they lost a lot of revenue. I once won against a bank that left deposits to pile up for days and bounced debits and checks for accounts that would have not been negative if the deposits were recorded in a timely manner. Online banking did a lot to discourage such tactics, as one can view their transactions as they are entered.
